In Hesiod's "Theogony", when Zeus has brought the cycle of oppression and revolution amongst the gods to an end he visits Mnemosyne in her cave. Together they produce nine daughters, known as the Muses. In this assemblage, as the collective Memory of the early gods, Mnemosyne represents the collection, preservation, and transmission of the histories of previous generations that sustains the culture and values of their descendants. She is presented as the combination of a mausoleum (cave, mound, pyramid, tomb) and a flowering/fruit-bearing plant. At her core sits a stone arrowhead, symbolic of technological innovation, violence, and the acquisition and defense of food and resources. Mnemosyne is the first work in the series "The Lost Consonants" which explores how Hesiod describes the origins and role of the Muses as providing guidelines for creating the ideal just and harmonious society. This assemblage was created using a dial telephone, Tastevin (win tasting cup); mirror, outside calipers, machine component, lamp-holder components, faucet handle lugs, plastic beads, wood, metal, marble, and paint.
