In the work “Ferryman. The river of love and oblivion”, both Christian and more ancient symbols are used. The still life is built on a white cross-stitched tablecloth and a wedding towel. A pot-bellied jug studded with beads indicates a woman who is faced with a choice between suitors. One of them deals with milk, butter, cheeses, and the other with wine and horses. All this love game is duplicated by national clay whistles in the form of birds. This plan of the still life is crossed by the ruble, the national ancient washing tool that symbolizes the river. We know that water is the source of all life, being a kind of symbol of primeval matter. Starting with the symbolism of Ancient Egypt, the symbol of water was a wavy line with small sharp ridges, personifying the water surface. Of all the elements, water is the most suitable mediator between fire, air and earth. By analogy with this, the water element serves as an intermediary between life and death. The symbolism of the boat is associated with the sending of the dead to the other world. In ancient Greek mythology, Charon is the carrier of the dead through the waters of underground rivers. The role of boats in the picture is represented by shuttles for weaving handmade carpets. An elderly fisherman sits in the first boat, Charon is in the central one, and a kayaker is in the third. In the cosmogony of the peoples of Mesopotamia, the depths of the waters were the designation of immeasurable, impersonal wisdom. Therefore, it is no coincidence that in the lower plane of the picture there are fishes, symbols of faith and Christianity. This painting is dedicated to Boris Mykhailov, an excellent artist, painter and friend of the author.
