About The Artwork

In ancient times, volcanoes were often shrouded in myth and mystery, and many cultures attributed their eruptions to the actions of gods or supernatural forces. The “last day of Pompeii” is a topic that has captured the imagination of many, blending historical events with mythological elements. The actual event refers to the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79 AD, which led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This natural disaster buried the cities under volcanic ash and pumice, preserving them in time and providing a snapshot of Roman life. Mythologically, the destruction of Pompeii is interpreted as divine retribution. Some have speculated whether the eruption was seen as a form of divine revenge for the Roman destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD.
