Ginko symbolizes memory, and this scroll drawing was inspired by a tree planted in our neighborhood as a memorial. The elegant ginko leaves are repeated as a pattern in the form of a tree trunk, creating an elegant column of texture. Hundreds of actual Ginko leaves were used to create this frottage drawing and the distinctive shape and vein pattern can be studied in the drawing. I have been obsessed with trees and tree trunks in my paintings for many years and I am excited to include the leaf shapes as patterns in these new drawings. I have traveled and exhibited in Japan numerous times, and I love look of the scroll format, and the versatility of its size and portability. This drawing is created with graphite on archival Tyvek, an extremely elegant material with embedded fibers that is reminiscent of Japanese papers, yet is extraordinarily durable and tough. The scroll height can easily be rolled to accommodate any ceiling height. Maximum height is 120" but looks great at 90" also. Because this is a scroll, the drawing can be displayed without framing, and is easily transported in case of a move.
