“The International Space Station racing around the world” 2021 Courtesy NASA photo. This remarkable image, taken on Dec. 2. 2021 by an astronaut attached to the robotic arm of the International Space Station illustrates the awesome complexity of the ISS and the fragility of its structures floating in weightlessness. The station is not affected by the force of gravity, because it is orbiting, or falling freely, at 27.600 km/h around our home planet. To see the station from such a vantage point racing around our planet must be an unforgettable experience. In this case I have not altered the original NASA photograph, because its sharp and detailed rendition is essential to appreciate the complexity of the fully developed ISS. Everything on Earth, including all living beings except plankton and other microscopic organisms, has adapted to the force of gravity. Since thousands of years gravity has shaped world cultures and aesthetics. To contemplate the structural fragility of satellites and space vehicles is to acknowledge that going into space will not only improve our understanding of the universe and of ourselves, but will, over time, also create a different sensibility, the aesthetics of zero gravity. As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
