About The Artwork

In my work I aim for my contemporary quilts to fluidly move from floor to bed to wall to furniture, challenging and expanding the conventional roles of quilts. Through this work I invite viewers to reconsider the practical and artistic potential of quilts in modern interiors. I am also highly inspired by Alexander Girard's manifesto and his extensive folk art collection, merging historic silhouettes with modern designs ideal for contemporary interiors. The geometric nature of the work, a nod to both with it's mahogany frame. Piping around the final piece gives the allusion of upholstery, referencing the transferrable traits of interior elements. Stamped and dated on back.

Shayla Bond is a Canadian textile artist who integrates design principles into fibre works to preserve heritage craft techniques within a contemporary framework. Her work explores themes of perfectionism, control, and obsession through aesthetic strategies such as colour, precision, and repetition. In her recent body of work she explores the diminishing relevance of the handmade in an age dominated by technology. Starting with computer-generated pixel designs created using numeric input, she digitally manipulates colours to elicit emotions and aesthetic response. These compositions serve as the brainchild of the computer, and she assumes the role of craftsperson. Bond translates the digital visions using woven fabric, and precise cutting and sewing techniques. Perfectionism manifests through the manipulation of pliable materials, compelling them to take on definite forms. Her work aims to center the resilience of craftsmanship and a process-based practice in the digital age.
