About The Artwork

I live on a farm which has a valley - the remoteness, views and spaciousness are deeply inspiring and I love spending time there watching the changing sky, reflections in the pond and listening to the sounds of neighboring animals. I take a lot of photos and do sketches but back in the studio I also work from memory and try to convey the vitality of the place and how it felt to be there in the moment. Working in acrylic helps me to build layers fluidly and is wonderful for expressive mark-making. Ink and colored pencils were used to add additional marks and variation in the textural quality. The painting has been varnished and will be sent unframed to minimize the weight. I would recommend a tray-style/floated frame in natural timber to complement the work.

Deborah Moss works from her country studios beside a native forest in North Auckland which provides endless inspiration for her creative practice. Working mostly with paint, she begins each piece with expressive marks which mirror her dynamic surroundings. Layers and colours in this stage are applied playfully - inviting a more considered response as the dialogue between gestures and storytelling evolves. Experimenting with texture and a variety of non-conventional tools adds depth and interest in her paintings. She strives to create contrasts between considered and gestural marks; light and dark, space and active areas but above all - a passionate response to her muse in her chosen medium. The artist has exhibited throughout New Zealand and her works are held in private collections in New Zealand and the United States, Singapore, England and Australia. She has been a regular finalist in national art awards and is the 2022 Supreme Winner Craig's Investment Partners Art Prize (Wanaka). Every time Deborah sells an original artwork, a native tree is planted on her property as part of her “Planting hope” initiative to help the environment.
