About The Artwork

This work is part of a series of paintings exploring the inner, emotional lives of women and the grief they go through when deprived of the fellowship of their sisters and mothers. Strangers in new lands, they have left everything they know, intimately, behind in seemingly a forgotten lifetime. They must forge new paths for themselves, hold new conversations, make new connections. This painting documents a moment of disquiet where the protagonist yearns for the fellowship of women she has left far behind. The paintings in this series arose out of a desire to combine the raw, gestural energy of life drawing with the serious gravity of oil paintings. It was built up slowly, in many layers of varying opacity and translucence. It revels in deep, saturated colour and varied texture.

I am ethnically a Pakistani artist, living and working in Sydney. I am self-taught and enjoy painting landscapes and still life in oils. I allow my art practice to evolve in different directions as I discover new materials and ideas. In the past couple of years, I have been enjoying my discovery of beeswax as a painting medium and a lot of my recent work incorporates the heavy texture and subtle shifts of colour that working with wax allows. I am inspired by how light transforms objects and people. Light and shadow are two important characters that populate my work. My paintings develop slowly, in layers of varying thickness and opacity. Each stage of work is instinctive, leading to, and determining, the next. In a meditative conversation between my work and myself, the end often arrives as a revelation. I have travelled and lived for many years in Europe, the Middle East and Pakistan, so the influences in my work are varied and diverse.
