A curious trivia is that gold particles and other metals are passed up to us from the soil through food, so that each of our bodies potentially contains about 2 milligrams of gold! Since surplus metals are naturally rejected by the body through our skin and hair, human hair shafts contain nanoparticles of gold. This got me thinking about Gold and Hair; and the fact that hair has always been a fascination for human beings. So much so that there are now multibillion dollar industries surrounding hair products and treatments, and serious issues ranging from racial stigma to body shaming to social status to religious debate with hair at their source: Hair dyeing or going gray? Taming curls or staying natural? Embracing baldness or getting implants? Wigs or weaves? Waxing or laser? Head covering or visible hair? So much heartache and judgement from a feature naturally designed to shield and protect our bodies makes me wonder; is it worth all the pain? And what if we had flowers instead of hair? Shimmering gold paint background, protruding silk flowers with delicate pearls, and exquisite brushwork make this painting a unique and striking piece! D-rings attached and ready to hang- Stretched canvas, no frame.

Ghia Haddad is a visual artist from Dubai. Born in Beirut, she lived through war and displacement and understands the power that art and artists have to spark positive social change through expressive color and imagery. She is passionate about examining identities of underrepresented women through her figurative art. Ghia expresses these identities by infusing her female portrait paintings with flowing fabrics, handmade flowers, beads, string and embroidery, thus challenging the traditional belief that fiber art does not have a legitimate space within high art. She also paints Arabic calligraphy with fabric collages on acrylic pours - vivid expressions in the language of her people; Arabic words mirroring the journey of their experience and the shades of their shifting identities.
